Silicon carbide abrasive, also called carborundum, is a hard synthetic ceramic made by heating silica sand and carbon at very high temperatures. It is one of the hardest commercial abrasive media, second only to materials like diamond and boron carbide. It conducts heat well, resists chemicals, and keeps its strength at high temperatures.
Silicon carbide grit is SiC crushed and graded into sharp, angular particles by mesh size. The sharp edges cut fast, and the grains fracture to expose fresh edges as they wear, so the cutting action stays consistent.
Grit (coarser, about 8-220 mesh) is used for blasting, grinding wheels, and abrasive tools. Powder (micron sizes) is used for lapping, polishing, refractories, ceramics, and metallurgy.
