What Is Aluminium Oxide Grit?

Aluminum oxide grit is a synthetic abrasive made by melting alumina (aluminium oxide) and bauxite in an electric arc furnace at very high temperatures, cooling it, then crushing and screening it into graded sizes. The crystals are hard, sharp and blocky, so they cut fast and stay sharp. It is also called fused alumina, corundum grit, and aluminum oxide blasting media(in fine sizes).

Why it is the most widely used blasting media

It is hard enough (9 Mohs) to cut steel, stone and glass, tough enough to be recycled many times, chemically inert, and available in sizes from coarse grit to micro powder.

Grit (about 12-240) is used for sand blasting machine operation, grinding wheels, and surface preparation. Powder (micron sizes up to 800 mesh) is used for lapping, polishing, refractories, and ceramics.

Virgin vs Commercial Aluminum Oxide Media

• Virgin aluminium oxide: corundum, 95% min Al₂O₃, 9 Mohs, specific gravity 3.9 min. Very tough; it can be reused around 6-7 times in blasting machines (depending on pressure and setup), makes less dust, and costs more.
• Commercial aluminium oxide: emery or lower-purity alumina, 70% min Al₂O₃, 8 Mohs, specific gravity 3.6 min. Lower cost, shorter life, suited to one-pass or less demanding work.

Rule of thumb: virgin grade costs more per kg but is usually cheaper per job when you can recycle the grit.
