What Is a Grit Blasting Cabinet?

A grit blast cabinet is a closed-form version of a grit blasting machine, combining the blasting mechanism, dust collection, and abrasive recycling in one sealed enclosure. Since the operator works through glove ports rather than standing in the blast zone, exposure to airborne grit and dust is significantly reduced compared to open-air blasting - though basic precautions during loading, unloading, and cabinet maintenance are still worth following, since dust can still be present at those points in the process.

A connected dust collector traps airborne particulate during operation, keeping visibility clear and the surrounding area cleaner than open blasting would allow.

How the Grit Blasting Cabinet Works

In a pressure or suction configuration, turning on the air compressor and cabinet switch supplies compressed air to a solenoid valve, which directs air toward the blasting gun. A moisture separator removes water from the air line, a non-return valve prevents grit from backing up into the moisture separator, and an air regulator controls flow into the gun. Once triggered, grit and air mix and exit through the sand blasting nozzle onto the component; spent grit and dust fall into the hopper for recovery, while the dust collector traps fines to keep the process clean.

A wet configuration works differently - steel grit is mixed into a water slurry before reaching the gun, producing a dust-free process suited to more delicate finishing work rather than aggressive rust removal.
