Where Is a Flame Spray Gun Used?

A Flame Spray Gun is used in metalizing, corrosion protection, wear-resistant coating, industrial repair, technical coating, and surface treatment applications. It is particularly useful where molten metal wire or powder needs to be deposited onto a prepared component surface.

01

Corrosion Protection

Flame spray guns are widely used to apply protective metal coatings that help protect industrial components against corrosion and environmental exposure.

02

Zinc Metalizing

A zinc spray gun can apply zinc coatings to prepared steel surfaces for corrosion and weather protection. Zinc metalizing is used for industrial structures and components exposed to demanding environments.

03

Aluminium & Copper Coating

The equipment can be used for spraying suitable aluminium and copper materials where conductive, protective, or functional surface coatings are required.

04

Wear-Resistant Coatings

Flame spraying can be used to deposit suitable coating materials on components where improved surface durability and wear resistance are required.

05

Industrial Repair & Reconditioning

Thermal spray coatings can help restore or modify selected component surfaces before machining or finishing, depending on the material and application.

06

On-Site Metal Spraying

The relatively portable design makes a Flame Spray Gun suitable for certain on-site coating requirements where transporting large components to a fixed coating system is impractical.

About Flame Spray Gun

A flame spray gun is an industrial thermal spray equipment used to apply molten metal wire or powder onto component surfaces for corrosion protection, wear resistance, and technical coatings. Airo Shot Blast manufactures and supplies Flame Spray Guns in India, with models available for industrial coating applications and an indicative price starting from ₹45,000, depending on configuration and requirements.

What Is a Flame Spray Gun?

A flame spray gun is a thermal spray tool that feeds wire or powder into an oxy-fuel flame. The material melts, and compressed air carries the molten droplets onto the workpiece, where they cool into a layer of metal. It was the first thermal spray method developed, often called oxy-acetylene combustion spraying.

It can spray both ferrous and non-ferrous materials, and the coating takes its name from the metal used:

  • Zinc spray gun: silver-grey anti-rust coating
  • Aluminium spray gun: bright, heat-reflective coating
  • Copper spray gun: reddish-brown conductive or decorative coating

How Does a Flame Spray Gun Work?

  1. Surface prep: Blast the steel to a clean, grey, rough, near-white (Sa 2.5) finish using a sand blasting machine or abrasive blasting machine.
  2. Ignite: Fuel gas and oxygen are lit at the gun nozzle. This is simple and quick.
  3. Feed: Wire is driven into the flame (or powder is fed in) and melts.
  4. Atomise: Compressed air breaks the molten metal into fine droplets.
  5. Deposit: The droplets hit the surface, flatten, and solidify into a coating of 50-500 µm.
  6. Seal (optional): A topcoat of epoxy, phenolic, acrylic, or silicone gives the coating a longer life.

Key Benefits of Our Flame Spray Gun

Technical

  • Easy to operate and to ignite
  • Handles both hard and soft wires
  • Extension modules are available for internal bore work

Economic

  • Lower starting cost than arc spray or HVOF systems
  • High deposit efficiency with low-melting metals like zinc and aluminium
  • Low maintenance design keeps running cost down

Operational

  • Portable, so it suits on-site and field spraying
  • High spray rate with low gas consumption
  • Can spray non-conductive wires
  • Less fine dust, so overspray is less flammable or explosive

Flame Spray vs Arc Spray vs Powder Flame Spray

Feature Flame Spray Gun Arc Spray Gun Powder Flame Spray Gun
Heat source Oxy-fuel flame Electric arc Oxy-fuel flame
Feed material Wire (or powder) Two conductive wires Powder
Starting price From ₹45,000 From ₹70,000 From ₹45,000
Power needed No electricity for the flame Electric supply No electricity for the flame
Portability High Medium High
Best for On-site zinc/aluminium work, general coating High-volume production Powder alloys, hard-facing

How to Choose the Right Flame Spray Gun

  • Coating metal: zinc, aluminium, or copper, in wire or powder form.
  • Wire size: confirm 1.6-3.2 mm compatibility.
  • Fuel gas: choose acetylene, LPG, propane, or hydrogen based on your site supply.
  • Job size: field repair or full production line.
  • Surface prep: pair the gun with a grit or sand blasting machine. A clean, rough steel surface is what makes the coating stick.
  • Accessories: confirm the hose length, flowmeter, regulators, and stand you need.
