A screw conveyor is an industrial material-handling solution designed to transport abrasive media, spent steel shots, grits, dust, and bulk materials efficiently within shot blasting machines, blast rooms, and abrasive recovery systems. Its heavy-duty rotating screw continuously moves used abrasive toward the recovery and recycling unit, helping reduce manual handling and improve blasting efficiency.

Our industrial screw conveyors are hard-surfaced specifically to resist the wear that abrasive bulk material causes on standard flights. A hard-surfacing alloy is welded onto the carrying side of the flight face; for especially abrasive materials like glass cullet, glass beads, or wood bark, the non-carrying side, outside diameter of the flight, and the central pipe's exterior can all be hard-surfaced as well, protecting the softer base material underneath.

This matters because a standard, non-hardened screw feeder conveyor wears out quickly when moving steel shot or grit continuously, exactly the recovery-loop application these conveyors handle in our shot blasting machines and blast room systems.

What Is a Screw Conveyor?

A conveyor system moves material using a rotating screw shaft mounted inside a trough; as the screw turns, its helical blade pushes material along the length of the conveyor. It's built from three main parts:

• Screw trough: U-shaped or circular, built from steel plate (2- 10 mm thickness) or heat-resistant steel plate for high-temperature material
• Screw shaft: steel pipe sized for the required strength and hardness, with flanged ends for bearing attachment
• Impeller (screw blade): steel or stainless steel, welded to the shaft in a spiral to form the conveying blade

Conveyors can be configured for horizontal, vertical, or inclined material movement, and are used across automotive, wood processing, pharmaceutical, chemical, food, metallurgy, construction, and agricultural industries, as well as inside our own abrasive blasting machine.

How the Screw Conveyor Works?

Material moves through a combination of gravity and friction between the material and the conveyor wall. As the screw rotates, the blade provides thrust, pushing material along the trough. The non-rotating material at the shaft's midpoint is driven forward as the rotating blade advances beneath it, ensuring even distribution across the full length of the conveyor. Consistent screw filling is what keeps this gravity-dependent mechanism working efficiently; an underfilled conveyor loses throughput.

Choosing the Right Screw Conveyor

Key factors to specify when ordering:

• Material type and condition, including maximum particle size and bulk density
• Required capacity and conveying speed, measured in kg/hour, tons/hour, or cubic feet/hour
• Conveying distance and slope required
• Operating temperature and feed conditions, which affect trough material selection

For abrasive applications specifically, bearing and coupling shaft selection matters most. Hard iron bearings and hardened coupling shafts suit moderately abrasive materials like crushed limestone or Portland cement. For highly abrasive applications, alumina, fly ash, or steel shot and steel grit recovery, Stellite-sleeved bearings and coupling shafts are the right choice.
