What Is Plastic Media?

Plastic abrasive media is a dry blasting abrasive made by crushing and screening cured thermoset resin, such as urea-formaldehyde, melamine, or acrylic. The particles are angular and lightweight, so they can lift paint and coatings without cutting into the metal, composite, or plastic beneath. It is also called plastic blast media, plastic abrasive blasting media.

How plastic media blasting works

The media is fired through a sand blasting nozzle at low pressure (about 20-40 psi). Its sharp edges shatter and dislodge paint, rust-preventive coatings, and carbon, while the substrate, which is harder than the media, is left undamaged. The media can then be separated from the dust and reused several times.

Plastic media vs sand and hard abrasives

Sand and aluminum oxide sit at about 7-9 Mohs and will pit or distort thin or soft materials. Plastic blasting media sits at 3-4 Mohs, so it suits delicate substrates and parts where dimensions must not change.
