What Is Chilled Iron Grit?

Chilled iron grit is an angular metallic abrasive made from chilled (white) cast iron. Molten iron is cast into shot, rapidly cooled to lock in a very hard structure, then crushed and screened into graded sizes. The result is sharp-edged grey grit that cuts fast and breaks into new sharp fragments as it wears. It is also sold as iron grit, white iron grit and chilled cast iron grit.

The iron is cooled very quickly, so its carbon stays in hard carbide form instead of soft graphite. That gives the grit its hardness and cutting edges.
