What Is a Thermal Spray Gun?
A thermal spray gun is the tool at the heart of thermal spray coating. It melts a coating material (thermal spray wire & powder) with a flame or an electric arc, then a gas stream carries the molten droplets onto the part. The droplets flatten and solidify, building a layer that protects against corrosion, wear, erosion, abrasion, cavitation and heat.
The part is usually grit blasted first, which leaves a grey, rough, near-white surface for the coating to grip.

- Blast the surface: Clean the part to a grey, rough, near-white finish with a blasting machine.
- Feed the material: Wire goes in by wire feed, or powder from a powder feeder.
- Melt it: A flame or an electric arc melts the material.
- Atomise and spray: Compressed air breaks the molten metal into droplets and drives them onto the part.
