What Is Portable Sand Blasting?

Sand blasting forces abrasive media against a surface at high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth one, or strip away unwanted material - cleaning, shaping, and finishing in a single process. It works on metal, glass, brick, and wood, and can be done in a fixed cabinet (stationary) or with a portable machine taken to the job site.

Garnet sand was historically the most common media, but prolonged inhalation of fine crystalline silica dust is linked to silicosis and other respiratory conditions. Because of this, many operations now use alternative media - copper slag, steel grit, glass beads, baking soda, dry ice, or walnut shells - chosen based on the surface material and required finish. Proper respiratory protection is recommended regardless of media type.

How Does a Portable Sand Blasting Machine Work?

Abrasive media is loaded into a pressure vessel, pressurized with compressed air, then metered into the airstream and accelerated through a nozzle onto the work surface. The impact strips rust, paint, scale, and contamination, and can leave the surface profile needed for good coating adhesion.

• Decide on control type. Manual keeps cost down for straightforward jobs; remote control helps on jobs with frequent start-stop cycles or a single-operator crew.
