What Is a Strip Cleaning Machine?
A strip cleaning machine is a continuous shot blasting line built for coiled steel strip. The strip is uncoiled, passes through an enclosed blasting chamber where multiple blast wheels throw abrasive at it, and is then coiled again on the other side. It is mainly used for descaling stainless steel and carbon steel strip, and it also handles silicon steel, low carbon steel and titanium strip.
Unlike a batch machine where you load and unload parts, a strip cleaning machine is part of a production line. The strip never stops, which is why speed, wheel arrangement and abrasive recovery matter so much in its design.It works on the same principle as an airless shot blasting machine. A motor-driven turbine wheel throws the abrasive at high speed, so no compressed air is needed and the running cost stays low. The abrasive is then cleaned by an abrasive recovery system and reused, while a dust collector keeps the chamber under suction.
How a Strip Cleaning Machine Works
The working is simple to follow once you see the flow:
- Uncoiling: the strip is fed from the de coiler towards the inlet side of the machine.
- Entry tunnel: it passes through the inlet tunnel (vestibule) and pinch rollers, which keep the strip steady and stop abrasive from escaping.
- Blasting chamber: inside a sturdy blast cabinet, 8 blast wheel stations are placed at the descaling angle, 4 on top and 4 at the bottom. Each wheel has its own motor, so both sides of the strip are cleaned in a single pass.
- Exit tunnel: the cleaned strip leaves through the outlet tunnel and is pulled by the coiler and other downstream equipment.
- Abrasive recovery: used abrasive is collected, cleaned and sent back to the wheels, while the dust collector ventilates the cabinet and pulls out dust.
The machine can clean strip at up to 60 metres per minute, with variable speed so you can match the line to the surface condition. The whole sequence is controlled by PLC.
Main Types of Strip Cleaning Machines
Strip cleaning machines are usually specified by strip width and line requirement. Common formats include:
- By strip width: machines are built for strip widths up to 600 mm, 1650 mm and 2100 mm. Choose the one that matches your widest coil, with some margin.
- Multi wheel descaling line: the standard 8 wheel arrangement with wheels on both sides, designed for high performance mechanical descaling in continuous lines. The modular design lets us adjust the number of wheel stations to your output.
- Steel fabricated or civil constructed cabinet: the blast chamber can be built in fabricated steel, or as a civil constructed blast room with a fabricated steel doorway and air louvers that bring in the air needed for dust collection.
- Door options: sliding or hinged doors, depending on the space and access you have in your workshop.

Important Safety Considerations
A strip cleaning machine is a high-energy, continuous machine, so safety is built into the design:
- Interlocks: the blast wheel motors will not start if a door is open, and an emergency stop is provided.
