Coil Shot Blasting Machine: Working, Types, Abrasives, Safety & Price Guide

If you make wire, fasteners, springs or cold heading products, you already know that the quality of your finished wire depends on how clean the rod is before drawing. A coil shot blasting machine removes mill scale from wire rod coils without acid, so the surface is ready for drawing. This guide covers what the machine is, how it works, the types available, where it is used, which abrasive to choose and the safety points to follow. It also tells you what affects the price in India and how to contact a manufacturer.

What Is a Coil Shot Blasting Machine?

A coil shot blasting machine is a mechanical descaling machine made for wire rod in coil form. Hot rolled steel wire rod comes out of the mill with a hard layer of scale on its surface. If this scale is not removed, it gets pressed into the wire during drawing. That leaves a rough surface, causes wire breakage and wears out your dies faster. Wire plants that make fasteners, springs, welding wire and cold heading wire need a clean rod surface for consistent quality. Besides coil blasting, the same wheel blasting technology is also used in a structure shot blasting machine for angles, channels and beams, and in a roller conveyor shot blasting machine for plates and profiles.

For many years, pickling (dipping the coil in acid) was the standard way to remove scale. Today, stricter pollution rules and the cost of handling acid waste have pushed many wire plants towards mechanical descaling. A coil blasting machine throws abrasive at the coil at high speed using blast wheels. The shot breaks the scale off and leaves a clean, evenly textured surface that holds drawing lubricant well. Smaller jobs, such as cleaning tools, small parts or spot rust removal, are better handled by a sandblasting cabinet or a hanger type shot blasting machine. For surface finishing and fatigue life of metal parts, a shot peening machine is the better choice. Because the process is dry and acid-free, it is a clean alternative to a pickling line.

Key specifications of a standard machine:

  • Automation: Automatic and manual operation both available
  • Material to be blasted: Wire rod in coil (custom sizes possible)
  • Doors: Double door design
  • Capacity: Up to 100 tons per day
  • Machine type: Wheel blasting machine, wire rod coil blasting

How Does a Coil Shot Blasting Machine Work?

The process is simple and continuous:

  • Loading: The coil is hung on a mandrel arm. A lifter system raises it into the shot blasting room.
  • Blasting: Once the doors close, bi directional blast wheels throw steel shot onto the coil. The mandrel oscillates and rotates, so the shot reaches every part of the coil, including the inner and outer wraps.
  • Scale removal: The impact of the shot breaks the scale off the wire surface.
  • Separation and recycling: The scale, dust and shot fall to the bottom. A separator removes the scale and dust, and the clean shot goes back to the wheels for reuse.
  • Unloading: After the cycle ends, the doors open and the coil is taken out. The next coil goes in right away, which makes it a continuous batch operation.

Because the number and position of the wheels can be designed to suit your coil size, you can get the coverage your wire needs. If you want a custom layout, our team can design one for you.

Main features of our machine:

  • Polyurethane mandrel arm and lifter system
  • Acid free technology
  • Continuous batch operation
  • Single or double swing door
  • Fold in oscillating mandrel
  • Pitless design, so no deep foundation is needed
  • 12-bladed bi directional blast wheels
  • Manganese cabinet construction for long life

Main Types of Coil Shot Blasting Machine

You can choose a machine based on your production volume and how much you want to automate.

  • Manual Coil Blasting Machine: Suitable for small plants. The operator loads and unloads the coil and controls the cycle.
  • Automatic Coil Blasting Machine: The loading, blasting and unloading cycle runs automatically with little operator involvement. It suits high volume wire plants.
  • Single Door Machine: Compact in design and suitable for lower volume work.
  • Double Door Machine: One door is for loading and the other for unloading, so work moves continuously and capacity is higher. This is the setup that reaches about 100 tons per day.
  • Custom Wheel Layout Machine: The number and position of the shot blasting wheel are designed around your coil size and the coverage you need.

If you are not sure which type fits your plant, you can look at our full range of shot blasting machines or ask us to suggest one.

Where Are Coil Shot Blasting Machines Used?

These machines are used wherever steel wire rod needs a clean surface before the next process:

  • Wire drawing plants for descaling rod before drawing
  • Fastener and bolt manufacturing units using cold heading wire
  • Spring wire manufacturers
  • Welding wire and electrode producers
  • Steel wire rope and cable makers
  • Nails and mesh manufacturing

Plants in many countries also use this machine as a clean replacement for pickling lines. We supply shot blasting machines across India and also export to Dubai (UAE), Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Yemen, Qatar, Kenya, Australia, Canada, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, the US, the UK, China, Japan and other countries.

What Abrasive Should Be Used?

For coil descaling, the right abrasive is steel shot, usually a cut wire or cast steel shot of a suitable size. The choice depends on the wire and on how much scale it carries.

  • Mixed shot and grit: Sometimes used when a slightly rougher surface is needed to help lubricant hold during drawing. For grit based work, see our grit blasting machine range.
  • Steel shot (round): The standard choice. It removes scale well and leaves a smooth surface that works well for drawing. It also lasts through many cycles.
  • Size selection: Smaller shot gives a finer finish. Larger shot removes heavy scale faster. Your wire diameter and scale thickness decide the right size.

Avoid using sand or other non-metallic abrasives here. They break down fast, make a lot of dust and cannot be reused efficiently.

Important Safety Considerations

Coil blasting is much cleaner than pickling, but it still needs proper care:

  • Keep doors closed during blasting. Make sure the door interlock works before every cycle, so the wheels cannot run with the door open.
  • Wear protective gear when loading, unloading or doing maintenance: safety glasses, gloves, ear protection and a dust mask.
  • Use proper dust collection. A working dust collector keeps scale dust out of the workplace and keeps air quality within limits.
  • Inspect the machine regularly. Check the wear plates, blast wheel blades and manganese liners. Worn parts can lead to leaks of shot and damage to the cabinet.
  • Lock out power before maintenance. Never put your hands inside the cabinet until the machine is fully stopped and isolated.
  • Secure the coil on the mandrel. A poorly hung coil can slip or swing and damage the machine or injure someone.
  • Train your operators. The machine does not need skilled labour to run, but operators should know the controls and emergency stop.

Because this process uses no acid, you avoid chemical effluent, toxic fumes and the steam released in chemical descaling. That removes a big health and environmental risk from your plant.

Advantages of Coil Shot Blasting Over Pickling

  • No environmental pollution problem
  • No need for effluent treatment or post-treatment of waste, which chemical descaling requires
  • No health risk from acid fumes or steam when the machine is operated properly
  • Lower production cost
  • No skilled labour needed: Automatic shot blasting machine mein loading se unloading tak cycle automatic chalta hai, isliye operator ko heavy training ki zaroorat nahi padti.
