What Is an Air Breather Filter?

An air breather filter removes oil, water vapor, and dirt particles larger than 0.5 microns from the air compressor's compressed air before it reaches the operator's breathing respirator. Good breathing air needs to be free of oil and dirt, low in water vapor, and free of carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas that can cause unconsciousness and serious harm if it reaches the operator through a contaminated air supply.

A single unit can supply clean air to one operator or several at once, making it standard equipment on any job site running compressed-air blasting.

How the Air Breather Filter Works

Compressed air enters through the inlet coupling and passes through a vortex action inside the filter case, which separates out moisture. Glass wool in the filter cartridge removes dirt particles, while activated charcoal and carbon absorb residual oil, moisture, and odors. A second pass through glass wool removes any remaining contaminants before clean air exits through the outlet coupling to the operator's breathing hose.

All filtration abrasive media sits inside an anti-corrosion case. The outlet coupling connects to the airline running to the operator's blasting helmet, this connection, along with every other joint in the system, needs to be tightened properly to avoid leakage or pressure loss.

Two safety practices matter most in operation:

• Properly monitor and control air supply to the respirator at all times.
• Use an oil-free compressor, so the airline stays free of contaminants and the operator isn't exposed to carbon monoxide risk.
